The last time Walsall were religated to the bottom Division of English Football was at the end of the 1989/90 season. They stayed down for 5 seasons, being premoted as runners up in 1994/95.

As Walsall Swifts they spent several years in the bottom division, then Division 3 South. The turning point came when they signed Harry Bostock from then fierce rivals Darwin in 1896. They swapped him for a goat and 30 sheets of corrugated iron (which Darwin used on their impressive new main stand, it had the largest single span of corrugated iron in the world). Anyway with Bostock in the team Walsall soon soared to the top end of the 2nd Division and just missed out on promotion to the top tier to Worksop Town. After 3 years of missing out on promotion Bostock moved on to better things with Alfreton Town in Division One where he scored 72 goals in one season. Hope that helps
