I want to read a good book, but not a really, really popular one. Like Not Lord Of THe Rings, or harry potter, or When the wind blows. But something similar.

Check out David Eddings - The Belgariad - WOW. This guys mind will blow yours. Wonderful wonderful fantasy, but written like it was just real life - no talking dragons or anything. WOW. You've gotta try it.

You should try the Shannara Series!!! Each book is a different story but as the books go down, time does to. The main people are the relatives to the book before it. Its placed in the future after the first war of the races when humans, elves, dwarfs and etc.. battled it down and destroyed the U.S. which turns into the Four Lands and your adventure begins with Shea Ohmsford, an elf/man (who is the last living person to bear any of the great elven king Jerle Shannara's blood) who must use the Sword of Shannara to defeat the Warlock Lord. But, enough said. You should read them. And also the Heritage of Shannara. Its great.

If you like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, try King Fortis the Brave by Michael R. LaMontagne and Ronald E. Snyder. It's about a pair of twelve-year-old twins that are pulled into a magical land where they find themselves caught in a battle against an evil sorceress that has taken over the land. It's got a lot of adventure and a lot of humor in it and is one of the best books I've ever read. You'll love it!

There are so many good books in both Sc Fi and fantasy groups it is hard to pin anything particular down. In the fantasy group I would recommend Piers Anthony especially the first 6 or 7 of the Xanth series. The first of that series is A Spell for Chameleon or the Incarnations of Immortality Series of books he wrote, the first of those was Upon a Pale Horse which was about a man in the act of committing suicide who accidently kills Death and thus he has to become Death. The Wheel of Time series of books by Robert Jordan is very good as well as The Shannara series the first of which was The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. In the Sci Fi group I loved The Foundation series of books by Isaac Asimov the first of those book is titled Foundation, then Foundation and Empire and then Second Foundation. Another good series is the Dune Series of books by Frank Herbert.

Hmm... a good read but not the most popular choices? Well then...
Classic authors: While Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan and John Carter Warlord of Mars books are the most popular, you might want to go off the main road for his Carson of Venus series and The Moon Maiden.
If you prefer a modern master like Anne McCaffrey, while everyone raves about the books in her Pern/dragon series, the Acorna series and The Ship Who... titles are just as good.
For something a little more modern, while Terry Brooks' Shannara titles are popular, I wish he would write more book in the Magic Kingdom of Landover series.
And if you want something in a more light hearted vein, you might want to consider Robert Asprin's Myth Adventures. I highly recommend those!
Hope this helps.

We've had this discussion in my WoW guild for a little while now. Here's the list we've come up with for the genre. (Trying to come up with a top 10 list of "essential books". The last two are being fought over still)

The deed of Paksenarrian - Elizabeth Moon
Assassin's Apprentice - Robin Hobb
The Bone Doll's Twin - Lynn Flewelling
Wizard's First Rule - Terry Goodkind
Arrows of the Queen - Mercedes Lackey
The magic of recluse - L. E. Modesitt
The Colour of Magic - Terry Pratchett
The Planet Savers - Marion Zimmer Bradley

It might be a little hard to find this since they're out of print, but Julian May's Saga of the Pliocene Exiles is a science fiction series that attempts to explain how magic and fantasy orginated in the collective unconsciousness of humanity. The individual titles are:

The Many Colored Land
The Golden Torc
The Non-born King
The Adversary

If you liked 'Harry Potter' then you'd probably loved 'Ender's Game' by Orson Scott Card. It's about a six-year-old boy who is genetically engineered to be a soldier and is taken off to Battle School where he quickly emerges to be one of the best young soldiers there. But at the same time, it's clear he and the other students are being manipulated by the adults around them.
