If you are taking your laptop on trips, it won't really matter what you have at home. You should look for places that offer free wireless internet. Most Starbucks and cafes like panera and libraries offer this. Once you are close to one of these locations, just connect to them using your laptop, and you have internet.

I also think there is a way to connect to the internet using a cell phone. Only certain phones work. I've also heard that this is slow. The only advantage to this is that you can have internet anywhere.

I still think you should go with trying to find a location that has free wireless internet, but in the end, it is your decision.
