I'm talking about up and unders, head fakes, hook shots, low post spin offs, who was the best big man in NBA history when it came to finesse in the paint. Me personally, I'm going to say Hakeem Olajuwon. However, I never really got to see Kareem Abdul Jabbar play in his prime, only until he was older. I know you had David Robinson and so many others, Wilt Chamberlain. Who had more moves than possible as a big man than any other in NBA history?

Kareem and Wilt had the best low post games in NBA history. They were both incredibly sound fundamentally. Kareem's sky hook was the greatest and most unstoppable shot in NBA history, and his footwork to get that shot off was absolutely perfect.

I would say that Kareem had the best low post footwork ever. Bill Walton had near perfect footwork as well, and it's a shame that he lost about 9 years of his career to foot injuries. Walton was not as offensive-minded as Wilt or Kareem, he would often pass out of the low post, but he had a nice jump-hook shot himself, as well as a great turn-around bank shot from the blocks, and could get the shot off from either side of the lane.

Besides Wilt and Kareem, one other player who was probably a little better than Hakeem in the low post was Kevin McHale of the Celtics... McHale was truly the man of 1,000 moves... when the Lakers and Celtics played in the 80s, McHale was the toughest matchup for the Lakers...until L.A. acquired Mychael Thompson in 1987, they really had no one who could defend McHale in the low post...McHale would find 100 ways to score against you...up and unders, turn around jump shots, jump hooks...he was incredible....and he had great, great footwork as well.

But Hakeem was so good, you certainly can't go wrong with him on the low post either... and the amazing thing about Hakeem was, he started playing basketball very late in life (his late teens).. he grew up playing soccer. He'd only been playing basketball a couple of years before he played at the University of Houston.

In the Mid 90s, he was the best player in the NBA.

The majority of the centers from the 60s and 70s were very fundamentally sound. But I believe that Kareem stood out among a lot of very talented Hall of Fame centers from that era when it came to low post moves.

EDIT: Rajahs PR (below) is correct about Shaq, although Tim Duncan has flawless footwork as well... the thing to keep in mind is that today, players get away with moves that would have been considered "traveling" in the 70s or 80s...like the jump-step Shaq takes when he picks up his dribble... but he's perfected that move...

Hakeem Olajuwon is the only correct answer. In fact he's probably the most underated center of all-time. He might have very well been the best ever if you consider the teams, and amount of help he won 2 championships with. Especially the first when he had no other stars helping him. Not to mention he did defeat Shaq and Penny in the Finals.

Hakeem Olajuwon hands down. he had a nasty drop step and had all the power needed to bull his way in. Plus when he got older added a nice up and under move and a bit of a mid range shot.

Jabaar probably... he was great even when he was an old guy..
and that speaks to finesse... But Hakeem was a work of art...
Chamberlain was a scoring machine...

but the one guy you didn't mention should be in with that elite group but injuries sidelined him for too many games and that was Bill Walton
