There is a huge amount of research into transport of Oxygen in the blood and the structure and function of Haemoglobin. Some have looked at other metals as the central atom in place of iron (Fe). There was research into replacing it with Zinc (Zn the next up the electrovalent table of metals) but I believe this came to nothing.
I think this was based on the fact that Octopii have a transport system based on Copper (Cu) which is lower down the series and has a much poorer rate of oxygen transfer.
Why would you want to replace RBCs? They are continually replaced in the body, each lasting only a few days. It is the remains of these that give urine its colour. Any relacement would therefore have to be a continuous process unless the entire structure of bone marrow was altered to produce different cells.
