If I pay a bill, and feel that it is full payment, and write on my check, "Final Payment", it means zilch. Any balance is my debt.

"Amount proscribed by law", on the check? Final. The words may not apply, but "by law" must be a judgment by a court.

You can sue all you want to. I could "sue" you for divorce. The court may split a gut laughing, but I could "sue".

i don't think you should cash it. I am not 100% sure but i think that if you cash it you are saying you accept this check as a "final payment" meaning they wouldn't owe you any extra for left over comp time, or matching you on your 401 and also cashing it makes it seem like you accept being fired and wouldn't look too good on you if you did seek legal redress
