Do you think it has hurt the ability of young people to spell correctly and communicate effectively?

It bothers me when it randomly pops out in places it shouldn't be in. Here for example, it bothers me a lot. On blogs and other websites too.

But it's not all bad. It is really the only way to communicate with people via actual text messaging. Trying to spell everything correctly would drive anyone insane.

I think that as long as people keep on writing (and reading) serious or at least important things like essays, novels, short stories or just even letters to others, the world will not come to an illiterate end.

XD I like the first person's answer. But for mine, I'll say that yes, unless your texting to someone, it's pretty annoying to try and decode it when you're talking.

There's a reason for texting spelling, though. Texting charges by the letter, so the fewer letters there are in a message to get the point across, the better.

It might be having an affect on spelling, but if people really wanted to learn how to spell, they'd do it anyways. Texting is a useful skill for communicating on a cell phone--I just don't ever want to see it used on college term papers. ;)

Yes... but it can be very amusing when predicted text is used and "Textonyms" occur. That is when the wrong word is used from the list of words which are available from the same button presses.

I enjoy the word "Textonyms" even though it doesn't seem in popular use YET!

I think that poor spelling habits are due to other reasons altogether.

Usually in cell phone texting, economy of money, time and motion are of greater concerns.

Hell yes! I hate that spelling. It's not even spelling! It's like a lot of letters crunched together!
