Skin is a semi permiable membrane. Oils, water, and chemicals seep through it in small amounts. This is why people died in the olden days, from applying lead based make up to the skin...from lead poisoning! Also works the other way, as when in water, for a long period, we go wrinkly. Water has seeped OUT of the skin, into the water, of a greater volume, by osmosis. So skin is not water proof.
