When saying the current year, why do people say "2000 and 6"? Nobody ever said 1990 and 6, or 1870 and 6, so why 2000 and 6?

I would say, "your total is two thousand six dollars". Why would I say it any other way?

That doesn't explain it either. Why would people say "the year twenty ten" instead of "the year two thousand ten"? The number is...two thousand six. Why say two thousand AND six???

They may have said 1800 and 76, or 1900 and 96.

People usually don't put an "and" between the tens and the unit; they'll say "76", not "70 and 6". However, they will put an "and" between the thousands or especially the hundreds and a smaller number, such as "one thousand and three" (1000 and 3) or "one hundred and three" (100 and 3), as well as "one thousand three" (1003) or "one hundred three" (103).

I think you will find that stops when we get to 2010. People will probably say Twenty-Ten instead of the 2000 and what ever number.

Anyway, the only other alternative would be to say Twenty-Oh-Six. Not sure that would be any simpler.

Maybe it's because two thousand six sounds a lot like TWO THOUSAND SICKS. :)) So to avoid the miss-adjoining of such mundane words... people tend to add the "and 6". However, in my mother tongue, we actually say "one thousand nine hundred ninety and six". Oddly enough, 2006 is plain "two thousand six". :))

Because it's two thousand six and some people add the AND to it.
