I was under the impression that it meant "Less then Truckload". Why?

Why do people answer questions when they have no idea what they are talking about? You're right. And so are a few people here. It means "less than truckload". It means that what you are shipping is less than the capacity of the truck. Ultimately, it means that unless you want to spend a lot of money to ship your product door-to-door from your facility to the consignee without it ever being unloaded into a regional warehouse, it will be carried on the same truck with several other shipments that go from one regional terminal to another, where they are unloaded and put on smaller local trucks and delivered to the consignee. Since a standard semi trailer can carry somewhere near 44,000 pounds, unless you are shipping that much weight from one place to another, your shipment is going to be placed on a truck with other goods going to the same region. If you are shipping a full truckload of product, the carrier will take it directly from your facility to the consignee without unloading it and handing it off to a local carrier. Shipping LTLs with other LTLs going to the same region increases efficiency and lowers costs by ensuring that every truck crossing the country is loaded to capacity. Think of it as carpooling, for products instead of people.

What Does Ltl Mean

It means less than loaded.

An LTL carrier will typically make a number of stops, dropping off a pallet or two of cargo at each stop.

Truckload carriers, on the other hand, take a full trailer load of cargo from point A to point B.
