The government does not control EVERYTHING. In fact, we see what is happening in the U.S. with things like the patriot act, and see privacy and personal liberties in that country being eroded.
The government does not control radio and television in a way to tell us what we can listen to. What they do is say a certain amount of radio and television has to have a certain amount of canadian content to support canadian artists and the canadian entertainment industry. There is also the notion there of helping protect and promote canadian culture so as not to be dominated by the american entertainment industry. We get a lot of american programming and networks in Canada, but it would be nice to see more american networks like ESPN and HBO instead of just selected programs from those networks broadcast on canadian networks
True, taxes are high in Canada. But I believe they are only marginally higher than in most U.S. states. We also don't have to worry about paying for medical coverage. Post secondary education is significantly more affordable than in private American universities because of government funding(though more funding for universities would be nice), and our level of education is in no way inferior to the american level.
Canada doesn't have a habit of spending a huge chunk of it's budget on the defence industry, as does the U.S. In fact, the federal budget has been running at a surplus for the last 10 years or so. We don't have near the problems that the U.S. has with inner city ghettos, crime and poverty. Not that we don't have it, but it is significantly less of a problem. Americans think a weak Canadian dollar means we have a weak economy or something. It actually helps to have a weaker canadian dollar, as we get a good exchange rate when exporting goods to the U.S. As it is, the dollar has strengthened significantly in the last couple years, and is now worth about $0.90 U.S.
We have strict gun control laws here. While americans may see that as government trying to control their lives, we see it as a good thing. There is a growing problem with illegal weapons on the street, but I can tell you that anyone I know feels a million times safer in the average canadian city than they do when they travel to the U.S. Our per capita murder rate is much lower here.
While the weather here can be crazy at times, I enjoy the change in seasons. I actually like winter. There's nothing like a fresh snowfall on christmas morning! On the other hand, it's about 95 degrees here today(southern ontario). I can't take too many days with this kind of heat. I don't know how anyone could live in a place like Vegas, where this is just an average day!
