I used to play Dungeons and Dragons quite frequently until I moved away for college. Now I'm out of the loop I guess. I was recently browsing through a store with all kinds of manuals (I plan on getting back into the game) but I noticed there was a 3.5 edition and a Roman numeral 3 (lll) edition. What's up with D&D lately?

2nd Edition was just 1st Edition updated, with 3rd Edition they built over from the ground up, and 3.5 was when they corrected all the errors from 3rd (since it was essentially a new version) and just made it more playable. The big difference being, where they left the errors in 1st edition for 10 years until 2nd edition, they caught and corrected the errors in 3rd edition in just 4 years with 3.5

What's different=
*Everyone uses the SAME xp table instead of 1 for each class
*all the math- attacks and saving throws and magic item bonuses go UP instead of down, you know, how math actually works instead of that weird backwards system used in the 1st 2 editions
* There are only 3 saving throws to keep up with instead of a different save for every single danger category.
* Hit dice don't stop at 10
* Races don't have level limits
* Bards and Rogues are now separate classes
*They took out the weird "exceptional strength" categories, and now it goes from 18 to 19 without percentages
* all stats use one chart instead of a different chart for each.
* proficiencies became feats & skills
* Wizards can take feats to have hit points, or use armor, or use weapons.

It's about 10 times more user-friendly and learnable than the previous sets. A lot of the weird quirks and "what were they thinking?" stuff got tossed or upgraded. 3.5 rocks.

There are a number of changes between D&D (also known as Classic D&D), D&D 2nd edition, AD&D, 3rd Edition (has the roman Numeral III and was released in 2000), and 3.5 (the currenly latest edition).

The changes are too numerous to count. My advice is to read the books and see what you remember from the olden days and compare. You can also check the Wizards of the Coast website for new and upcoming guides, books, and accessories (www.wizards.com/dnd).
