How do I start making websites for people?

I mean I've made websites for many years, but I am not sure if i have the skills necessary to make good sites for other people. I am comfortable using HTML/XHTML/CSS/PHP (and though I can't write my own javascript, I can configure it easily, as well as other kinds of scripts) I am a pretty quick learner too if I don't know something. I can graphic design (PS) but unfortuantly can't design in flash (beside basic stuff, bullets, animation,... I can't do the complex designs). I am pretty familiar with everything as I've maintained my own websites for 6 years. I think I could use this skill as a way to make money and build up a portfolio during the summer, do you think it'd be a good idea?

If you've been doing it for years, you probably have enough work to present a decent portfolio.

I started my own web development business 5 years ago. The first year I underbid all of my proposals to develop a clientele. Now I charge market rate and have more work than I have time for.

To start, make sure you have a great portfolio. Try http://www.guru.com (you need to underbid there). I got 3 of my first clients there, and they're still clients... and they've referred be onto others. Barter some websites, do some work for non-profits. Network!!!! Contact designers and see if they need coders - designers are my biggest and best clients - (I charge them a little less than direct clients, but they provide me unending work, which saves me a lot of marketing time)

Now I am in a position where I can't accept anymore clients, and need to subcontract. It takes a lot of work, but you seem to have all the skills you need. I can't really tell if your sites look professional - that's a requirment!

Good luck.

Compared to offline businesses, the investment required to start an online business is minimal. A popular way of earning money on the internet is by providing information and services. This can be monetised by advertising or charging a subscription. You can also make money online by selling products on auction websites like eBay or through your own website. I have just started a web development business about 4 months ago. I went on www.guru.com to look for freelance projects. Slowly but surely, I have about 2 to 3 permanent clients right now. Maybe you can look for some freelance projects that may be easy to do to get a feel of it. Once you have built up your confidence, you can go all out to do all kinds of projects.

Many sites use javascript. It would be good if you could learn some of those skills. In any event, offer your services to local small business for a small fee and work your way up.
