Nelson was a great naval commander, but he's a prime example of a hero who died at the right time. If he had survived Trafalgar, it's probable that his infamous affair with Lady Hamilton would have ruined his career.

Nelson was a marginally innovative admiral in command of the best fleet on the seas. His tactics were audacious, but the risk paid off for him and for England. If the French had been a little less hidebound, though his tactics could have resulted in disaster.
Military truism: It never pays to overestimate the military prowess of the French.

First- What a cool name! Entered Royal Navy at age 12, lost sight in right eye, right arm amputated. Reminds me of my ancestor, Joseph Oliver Boggs. Entered Civil War at age 16. Lost sight in right eye when shot in the head, but survived.
