Is this reaction for real, and if so what causes it?

It is real, the large amount of surface area on the mentos (along with some other minor chemical affects that don't happen fast enough to really contribute) create a lot of small "nucleation sites" that allow the fizzing to happen.

Basically if you've ever slightly shaken a bottle of coke, you'd notice that it has a lot of stored fizz that it wants to let out. The bottle is too smooth inside so the fizz doesn't come out normally unless jarred, but with a mentos in there, it has thousands of small holes/disturbances for bubbles to form on.

Absolutely too much time on their hands! It creates a small meltdown.
Also Coke poured on battery terminals will boil off corrosion!
Baking soda & water does the same thing. The soda content reacts to certain chemicals present to create an outstanding "fizz." wooohooo!
