...since my teacher for 10 years stopped coming to my school. I haven't played it in ages now but it is still in my cupboard and lately I have been thinking about it, and feel sad that I never got any further than about gd 6, even though I was talented at it. I don't have the time or money to play it at the minute, and I hve forgotten most of the fingering. Still, it seems a waste it sitting in there, it was a present from my mother an cost alot.... what do I do?

I am in the same boat as you. I used to play the Clarinet, Flute and the Sax. I played clarinet for about 25 years, flute for about 5 years and sax most of the time too.
Then I moved & changed jobs and they have been in the cupboards since.
I do bring them out now and again and it's a GREAT feeling to play them again.
So do it. Get your oboe out of the box and start to practise. You will surprise yourself how quickly you pick it up again.
ALSO....you will NEVER forgive yourself later in life, if you do NOT give yourself the chance again.
SO may paople tell me how jealous they are of being able to play a musical instrument. It IS a talent that you have so don't waste it.
I have decided to get playing again, mostly because of your question and it has made me think of doing it again.
SO I HOPE I will push you, just a little bit, into playing again.

Choice # 1:

Take your Oboe and start practicing again. Do not pretend to play as you used to, you need to start again, do some long notes and try to remember the fingering again. Buy a book where you can find the fingering and practice with that. After you find the right fingering again, start playing Mayor, minor and chromatic scales slowly, hear your sound feel the vibrations on your mouth, lips, and body. Please be patient with your self.

Choice # 2:

If you think you cannot do this alone, try to find a teacher, go to the music school, or to a college and find a teacher there, believe me if he/she cannot give you a lesson because of his/her schedule, I'm pretty sure he/she will recommend some one who can help you. Of course you need to pay this person, Private Music lessons are not for free.

Choice #3:

After you try to go again into your music practice if you see that is not working you can sell the oboe and have some money. You can also give it to one of the members of your family and invite him/her to learn how to play. Or if your heart is kind may be you can donate it to a music school or to some one who knows how to play but doesn't has the instrument.

Take the instrument to the expert and check if everything is fine with it, some times Instruments that has not being playing in a long time needs a little tune up to make it able to play again.

Hope this can help
Good Luck

Either start playning again or sell it.
It is no good to anyone lying in as cupboard.
Somebody could be enjoying it. What a waste.

try to play it..its like riding a bike..it will come back to you..go to a music store you can buy books..or even look at books to tell you the fingerings..I would keep it since it came from your mom.

You don't have the money to play it?

Does it charge you by the hour?

Play for yourself, if you enjoy it.

If you don't, leave it alone and fill your life with things that make you happy.
