Why is hot dog eating contests considered a sport in the USA ?

I turn on the tv and tune in to the sports channel . And what do I see ? Hot dog eating contests ? How can that be called a sport ?

It's not a sport. It's a contest and it's entertainment. For some reason people love to watch these sorts of things.

We seem to love contests. There are contests for everything.. consider the hog calling contests lol
