I'm sorry but you are tragically misinformed.

The orbit of the Earth around the Sun is elliptical (I'll wait for you to go look that up.....are you back or have your eyes glazed right over?) and as such the distance between the two varies by *millions* of kilometers in the course of a year.

You should try reading a science book from time to time instead of believing evangelical Christian propaganda.

This is simply FALSE! The distance between the earth and the sun varies by a couple of million miles as the earth goes around the sun! Remember, the orbit is not a perfect circle, it is closer to being an ellipse.

This is not true. The earth does not orbit the earth in a perfect circle. The orbit is elliptical and varies from 91,000,000 miles to 94,500,000 miles. During summer in the northern hemisphere, the sun is actually farther away from the sun than it is in the winter.

If our orbit were some miles nearer the sun or some miles farther away, the effects would be negligible.

Really?! This is the first I've heard of it - because, you know, in science class they always taught us that the Earth's distance from the sun varied over the course of a year from 147,098,074 km to 152,097,701 km, a difference of almost 5 million km. And yet, the effect of this on the Earth's climate is utterly negligable compared to the influence of the Earth's axial tilt. So what in the name of $deity makes you think that an addtional 1 cm would do anything whatsoever to our climate?

I think the tolerances are somewhat greater than that, but we do need to take care to preserve the enviorment which many scoff at.
Unfortunately, we cannot move the scoffers to a different world and watch as they burn and choke. There is only one, and intellect must win this one, or we all lose. I do not mind at all people having their own belief when it will not kill us both; I do when it will.

The tolerances are much greater than that. The earth has more variation than that during a single year.

there are more than nine planets in the solar system? 50000 Quaoar, 90377 Sedna and 2003 UB313 are all small objects (ice chunks) that are being considered for planet status, and they are all farther from the sun than Pluto.
