If anyone could see what the poor scared animal goes through when pitched out in a strange place, no one would be so cruel. Our Bengal polydactyl (many-fingers and toes) cat is such a prize. He was crying and scared and would creep up to eat our cats' food and run away again. He had to contend with our territorial cats to snatch a tiny bit of food. It took months to catch him, and more months before he was brave enough to come out and socialize. Please don't ever drop off a pet. They won't just go to a house and be accepted.

One BIG reason why people do this is because the local animal shelters charge money when you drop off an animal, and they grill you about the animal, and all. That's what makes mothers put unwanted babies in the trash. Unless there's a "no questions" policy, like the local fire stations and hospitals are supposed to have, these things will happen.

I wish that everyone felt like you.
Just 2 days ago, a 10 pound dog was found where my husband works. The family was fired from there 2 weeks ago, and his co-workers think that they just threw the dog out of the window. His hind food is probably broken, because it is so swollen. Nobody knows how long this poor dog was hiding in the tall weeds. He is a walking skeleton with very bad looking fur. The day one of my husband's co--workers found him, he gave him 2 sandwiches to eat. When I went there that day to pick up my kids, my husband told me about him. We took him home and gave him a parvo shot. I also wormed him, and he ended up eating a whole can of dog food.
His name is Chico and because he knows his name, we know that this is the same dog that the family abandoned.
If Chico didn't come up to the worker within a few days, he would have been dead from starvation. I wonder how many animals that were once people's pets, just lay down in the weeds and die from starvation or being hit by a car. It gets me so mad when someone who dumps a pet out in the country thinks that some farm people will take them in. Like you said, cats are territorial and will chase a stray cat away. A dog might start killing farm animal in order to have food to eat. How long do you think a chicken killer would last on a farm?

Years ago, I gave a kitten to some people who ran a dog kennel. This cat lived in the kennel for a couple of years with a tom cat. One day, when some snow was on the ground, the woman decided that she didn't want the cats anymore. She actually told me that she took them down a road, and dropped them off. She turned around a little further down, and came back to come home. SHE RAN HER TOM CAT OVER because he wanted to go back home, and she didn't see him run back on the road.

We have many dogs and we don't need another one, but I will not let anything happen to Chico. None of our dogs have heart worm, and there is a possibility that Chico could be infected. I will make sure that he will be check out Monday. I also live out in the country, and have ducks, a turkey, geese, chickens and rabbits, dogs and fish. Our cats are strictly barn cats, and won't let you pet them. I have a lot of animals, and I really don't need a weak starved broken foot full of worms and maybe heart worms stray that can get my other dogs sick, but I would rather keep him then have him die alone without food and love.
I will put a picture of him on webshots.com later in the week. My name is justme515 and you can find my pictures by searching for pug dogs.

I have lived out in the country now for 12 years and over those years I have had over 60 cats left here. Between feeding them and the vet bills it keeps me broke. No one wants cats and all the shelters and rescues are always full. At least a rescue helped me get them fixed. So no I would not drop off an animal because I am the victim of people like that.

I agree that to drop one's own pet off is an irresponsible thing to do.
But I had a dilemma once where a dog showed up at our place (in the country) and I called every neighbor, looked in the paper for lost dogs, even called the vets and the animal shelter and no one could claim this dog. The animal shelter is far away and wanted a "donation" to bring him and I was about as broke as old Gramma, so I took the dog for a ride about 5 miles away. Felt guilty, but even if I could have scared up the money for the animal shelter they would have put him down in a short while. So I figured he at least had a chance down the road. But the dog came back. So I took him for a ride in the other direction.. He didn't come back. I saw him tied up in someones yard a few weeks later so I talked to the people there and they said he was their dog and he kept running off, so they tie him up now. So, a long story short, even though I felt bad about taking him away, at least he found his home and didn't get put down by the animal shelter.

I think that's so awful! I think people who would do something like that are some of the lowest forms of life. How hard is it to take unwanted animals to a shelter? At least there, they'll have food, water and shelter. And might possibly find a home with someone who will love them. I think it's so cruel and heartless to drop a defenseless animal off in the middle of nowhere. Maybe if these people were dropped off in the middle of nowhere and had no food, shelter, water or love, they would feel differently.

I live about 10 miles out from a larger city. There are lots of farms around here. Many times there have been dogs dumped out here. Last time I saw some there was a pack of 5 dogs. Usually we call to have them picked up. People are so mean! I can understand there are situations when you can no longer care for your pet, but that is what the humane societies are for! A person who could dump a pet does not deserve to ever have a pet again.

It's so sad!! :( People who dump off animals like this deserve a special place in hell. Adopt an abandoned animal when you can! I lived near a highway in OK when I was young, and @ssholes were always dropping off pets -- we adopted some, and tried to get good homes for the others. I had a gorgeous Irish Setter dog and an orange tabby kitten -- the mom cat had been left behind and had the kittens on our roof.

This is very cruel and inhumane, not to mention, its against the LAW! I am dealing with a colony of feral cats right now, because some moron dropped off a pregnant cat in our area a year ago!

The thing is, there are too many irresponsible people out there who do not get their pets spayed or neutered, and theres no excuse for it either because, there are programs out there you can take advantage of where the spay & neuter program costs, are extremely reduced to hardly nothing.

Those who dont get their pets spayed or neutered, have no business having a pet!

People tend to be irresponsible and careless. When they drop off an animal they are thinking only of themselves. Honestly, a free whatever sign in the yard could do the trick without harming the animal. I just adopted a stray rabbit from the shelter and she is a doll.

I can't think of a punishment bad enough for someone who would take an animal that loves and trusts them and then they throw them away like trash. I can't even imagine a poor dog or cat slowly starving to death, getting torn to pieces by wild animals while it's alive, or freezing to death. And what must they wonder as they watch the people that throw them out drive away?

Please remind people to have their pets spayed or neutered so there are less unwanted pets.

God bless you all for your generous kindness in helping strays. Thank you.

I understand how you feel. Just two or three days ago, I went by Bilos to see a little , or medium sized brown and white dog with a large yellow lab walking on the side of the road. It was pitifull. ANd you'll never know how much I wanted to pull the car over and take them home. The nerve people have these days. if u don't want a pet, take it to the shleter, or don't get one in the first place. I was the one who wanted to do Spots Foundation, where we were going to take in homeless dogs and cats, fix them and find them homes. but nobody belived in us so we did not start.
but i have rescued 8 stray dogs that came to my house.
