Yes you can buy an electric car. You just can't get one supported by a major manufacturer. Used EVs come up for sale on eBay from time to time, and popular ones like the Toyota RAV4 EV can sell for more than they sold for new.

Older electric cars, and converted gas cars sell for a lot less (less than $5000, sometimes) and can be found at places like this:

Is it worth it? Well, I drive an old EV. I spent $2000 for it, and another $4000 to fix it up. It's comfortable, reliable, accelerates fine, and does freeway speeds. It has old battery technology, so my range is only about 50 miles. But I can drive to work and back, do shopping, in fact almost everything I use a car for.

I love it!

Right now I would not buy an electric car, because as of now they are more trouble than they are worth. electric car today have to be recharged frequently, and have now power to them.

I just asked a question regarding this subject. take a look.

You can buy hybird gasoline/electric that are worth it. Toyota has two and Honda has something like 5 or 6. Also, if you buy a hybrid there are gov't tax breaks.

I'm pretty sure if you go to the right dealer you are able to buy them now.. but I have to worn you my uncle bought one and you know it was nice in the fact that it didn't use any gas but It doesn't go very fast at all... I mean like nothing past 60 or 70.

There are families in my subdivision who own street legal golf carts with tops, lights all around, windshields and wipers, seatbelts, sound system. Not just one or two but dozens.

Sure, they don't go fast, but they go fast enough to run to the grocery store, Blockbuster, take the kids to school, whatever. I'd get one. They are cool. And what's really cool - THEY HARDLY MAKE ANY NOISE! It's kinda funny to see them "woosh" by at night.

Ditto what apeweek said. :) I love my freeway-capable EV, too, and Ebay and the EV Trading Post are two good places to find EVs.
