My roommate passed out last night. He says he felt a lump in his throat and could not swallow. He has acid reflux and has been prescribed Nexium, which he forgot to take yesterday. Could he have gotten strangled on the reflux and passed out, or do you think this is respiratory?

It's possible, but highly unlikely. It could be related; but it sounds more like a panic attack to me. Is he the nervous type? If he is...this is probably what happened. Forgetting to take one pill would not bring this on. If it happens again; he needs to see a doctor. There are many reasons for a person to pass out...too many for us to guess at. "Better safe than sorry."

Most likely it was his own acid that worked it's way back to his throat that made him pass out,the pain from acid reflux in your chest if you are not under medication is unbearable, especially when you eat the wrong foods

My dad has acid reflux and ulcers; sometimes he kind of throws-up in his sleep and chokes. He went to the doctor and luckily the medication he was prescribed works.

Your roommate should probably see his doctor as well.
