would voice lessons help at all, or do you need to have a good voice to begin with?
also, is there any way to do it without humiliating myself and going to lessons?

Do you have good pitch (can you sing in tune, do you know what "in tune" means)? One of the greatest singers in the US didn't like their own voice and his became beloved even during a time of extreme racial tensions. One of those crazy anomalies. I'm speaking of Nat "King" Cole.
The story goes something like this: early on, he wanted to do something about his voice, and so he worked on developing a tone and a style. Guess he wasn't satisfied just being a great pianist. Lessons are the best choice for you, because it shouldn't be a humiliating experience ("bad teacher"), it should be exhilarating. As long as you are willing to work hard, you will get to where you want to be. Look for a teacher who can help bring out your style. They are out there. Good Luck~

Some people are born with that gift, but you can learn to sing better by going to a voice coach. Don't worry about being bad....I'm sure they've heard worse and are used to it. Anyways, if you could sing, you wouldn't need a voice coach so i don't think they expect you to already be a good singer. Just don't be afraid and not do anything. Just take that first step. You most likely won't regret it.

I think someone answered the wrong question above.

You are probably trying to sing the wrong type of songs for your voice. You have to be selective depending on your voice. Unless you really want to take it further, I would just sing along with the radio or tape. It is easier if you know the words. The alternative, especially if you are tone deaf, is to learn some beautiful old poems and do recitation instead of singing. Both are wonderful means of enjoyment............ alone or with a crowd.

Go to lessons. If you have a good teacher you will never be embarrassed by your voice. I went to singing classes and learned not only how to sing, but how to breathe correctly, keep time accurately and made lots of friends too. Good luck.

Voice lessons would help you learn how to do each note w/in the song. Attending lessons would be humiliating to you as you are there to learn; your teacher is there to help you learn, so do not be ashamed as if it is something that you truly want to do, you should go for it.

Singing lessons helped my brother in law. His singing voice use to sound like nails scratching a chalk board. After 6 months of lessons he's able to lead praise with his guitar and singing. Not a recordable voice mind you but tolerable and mildly pleasent. Call a voice coach and explain your delima and ask if they can try to help you. Worse they can do is refer you to someoe who can.

the key is to utilize your ears to help you sing...make sure you hear every note and mimic the person's voice try to match it as best you can and be repetitive because your voice is a muscle...practice will always make perfect..although lessons can't hurt :)

I don't like the tone of your question and have decided to just forgive you for the mocking and mean treatment of Vietnam Vets. I lived for three years in a bamboo cage on my knees. I was eventually released by a sweep that was done by the military. I am now permanently disabled and I used to be fabuloous ball room dancer. Ahh those days are all over. Remember to be kind and friendly to everyone online for you do not know who has served and been beaten by the Viet Cong while living as a prisoner. Thanks
