are you able to live with another relative? You are close enough to the legal age and you should start thinking about your independence. If possible Find a friend or relative and stay there for a while but, make sure you have a job to help out with the bills so they are less reluctant to let you stay.

Well maybe that's all your mother can afford as far as rent talk to her tell her you don't feel safe get involved in activities outside neighborhood but really its on you get to know the people they bleed just like you have feeling and a person can tell if your being prejudice not saying you are but when you ask a question for white only and refer to your neighborhood as the ghetto makes you look racist start by looking inside what can you do to make it better dont blame mom i know i lived in projects and no i didnt want my kids there because of violence but i made some great friends while there so back up look again

Ok you are 17…that means you have one more year to show honor to your parent’s wishes. 12 months to plan and carry out how to be true to yourself and what you’re going to do with the rest of your life after you turn 18 or able to get out of the area you think you don’t what to be in.
•1st things first…Bree, you need to come to understand every culture has its down sides. Even the very rich uptown or outlying rural areas have their cultural burdens and weirdness. Even some of those people are totally racist, it's weird if you see a day that they are not fighting or listening the word n_e_w or the pressures of keeping up with every other person or fighting off the desire to be involved with drug, crimes, and moral ethical issues.
Can you see what I am saying only you have the power to change or paint your life’s picture.
Attitude is the paint brush to life success…gets a good brush and start painting.

Well, the thing about school and community that we don't recognize when we are just 17 is that its just a good reflection of life when you get older.
So do your best at it now and try hard to cope with it. Be creative now and set the stage for later. If it becomes dangerous then serious talk to your mom without being demanding or resent full. She'll understand better this way.

Perhaps it is the only place your mother can afford. Have you tried to make friends? How about your dad? Could you live with him? Anyway, if you're 17 it's only a year til you should be out on your own so I'd suggest getting a PT job and save and get ready. Trust God. Good luck.

Gawd! I'd want to get out out of Dodge ... too.

At least one answerer suggested that the reason was probably economics. Perhaps you can convince your mother to move to a smaller community where the rent is more affordable. There may be some bad neighborhoods ... chances are you can avoid theme.

I'm sorry for your position in an environment full of people who can't see past the color of your skin. It's truly pathetic how shallow people can be. Your heart beats, your blood is red, you think and feel and for some reason some people see you as sub-human because of the color of your skin. Sad, very very sad. So it goes everywhere you will go. Perhaps you will find someone who will view you as the person you are. This may be a good life lesson for you though. A tough one but a good one.

I don't like the tone of your question and have decided to just forgive you for the mocking and mean treatment of Vietnam Vets. I lived for three years in a bamboo cage on my knees. I was eventually released by a sweep that was done by the military. I am now permanently disabled and I used to be fabuloous ball room dancer. Ahh those days are all over. Remember to be kind and friendly to everyone online for you do not know who has served and been beaten by the Viet Cong while living as a prisoner. Thanks

You're 17, if you want to move you'll be legally 18 and the age to move out.

Just wait till you're 18 and move.

You're probably there because it's affordable for your mother. You could get a job and help her with some expenses, and then you could move to a better area.
