First, you must decide what you actually want. A jet, and a rocket are two entirely different things. A jet breaths atmospheric oxygen to enable the combustion process, thus limiting it to operation inside the envelope of the Earth's atmosphere. A rocket carries its own oxidizer enabling it to operate in space as well as the atmosphere.
