If you haven't ever changed the spark plugs then the answer is YES,however if you have been keeping after the maintenance on the car I would start by pulling a couple of the spark plugs (maybe one from each side of the engine assuming that you have a V6 or a V8 engine) and seeing what they look like, there should be a tannish/grey color to the insulator (the part that sticks out of the plugs end that goes into the engine) if it's that color then the motor is basically sound internally, however if the plug shows signs of being wet or oily then the engine has bigger issues,(one question ? when you start the car after it has been sitting for a while either overnight or just parked for a while do you get a cloud of smoke out of the tailpipe) you may need a friend/helper to help you do this test if you do then the valve seals in the engine are worn out,if not have someone follow behind you while you are driving and you step on the gas if the person following you sees any smoke (especially GREY smoke) then the piston rings are worn out. If you have neither of these conditions then I would recommend a complete and thorough TUNE UP including a (COMPRESSION TEST,NEW SPARK PLUGS,NEW SPARK PLUG WIRES,NEW AIR FILTER,NEW FUEL FILTER,NEW DISTRIBUTOR CAP,NEW DISTRIBUTOR ROTOR,NEW PCV VALVE AND HAVE THE TIMING CHECKED) Of course this all assumes that your battery, alternator and starter motor are working properly.

Try changing the oil in engine along with the transmission & plugs and check your battery level, check your fan belt for tightness or slackness and have your alternator checked out while you at it.
Have the person checking your classic put it on a diagnostic machine... it leaves nothing untouched.
Happy Motoring!.

what i would do is ,change the plugs, wires, and if its got a cap and rotor ,change them, just do a complete tune-up and see if that helps.i got a 88 olds delta 88 3.8 and i did a complete tune-up here while back and it helped mine, also your air filter, and gas filter will help also.good luck.
