Hi Cipher,
Of course it depends on how much you sew but the basics would probably be:
Thread (don't get carried away with odd colors unless you need them. Stick with Red, Black, Blue, White)
Assortment of Needles (little needles for thin material, big ones for thicker)
Scizzors (sharp ones)
Seam Ripper (little tiny tool, but ohhh so handy)
Pins/Pin Cushion
Tape Measure (the material type, not the toolbox type...lol)
That is the very basics, anything else you decide to add would be to your advantage.
Hope this helps.

I teach some girls in my neighborhood to sew and this is what I recommend to them:
-1 large pair of scissors for cutting fabric and patterns
-1 pair of small scissors, for small handwork and for trimming in small places.
-Straight pins, and a magnetic holder (found in fabric stores - looks like a thick dish, but pins stay in place - easier to grab from than a pincushion)
-tape measure
-hand sewing needles - get a variety pack, as it should cover nearly everything you would need at first.
-seam ripper - a necessity for sewing frustrations.
-thread - buy just a few basics - not a ton of these, but make sure you get a spool of denim or topstitching thread - this is good for sewing on an emergency button when you lose the one on your pants - regular thread just won't hold it on for very long!
Items to be included that are good for life's little emergencies:
-a few buttons
-safety pins
More items that will help as you venture forward and become more experienced at sewing:
-hem gauge
-tailor chalk
-tracing wheel and tracing paper
-velcro closures
-hooks and eyes
