Expensive:
Melisse (in Santa Monica): Absolutely unbelievable food, the best service I've experienced anywhere. If you're looking to really splurge, this is the place.
Providence: I think it's on Melrose Blvd. Also wonderful. Asian-flavored decor, lots of seafood.

Cheap:
Highland Grounds (on Highland, just north of Melrose): Great breakfasts. Skip the pancakes and order one of the "breakfast novelties." Just healthy enough and just greasy enough.
Mama's Hot Tamales (Downtown @ 7th and Lake): Wretched neighborhood but this is NOT a dive. It's a lovely, spacious, brightly painted cafe that serves PHENOMENAL mexican food. The tamales are unreal. I park in the lot behind the restaurant.

Nice but not Crazy Expensive:
Ennoteca Drago (Beverly Hills): Great casual Italian. Has a really warm feel to it. Fantastic wine selection but watch out for the prices.
La Boheme (Santa Monica Blvd. just east of La Cienega): I love this place! The decor is completely over the top and yet, it works. Gorgeous red walls, massive chandeliers, a wonderfully theatrical vibe. Fun staff, wonderful food, and signature cocktails. (If I had to pick, this is my favorite.)

Mulberry Street is owned by actress Cathy Moriarty.

An offbeat German restaurant is Lowenbrau Keller on Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles. That's just a little west of the original Tommy's at Beverly Boulevard and Rampart Boulevard.

My current fave is "Off Vine". But I change my mind depending on what I am hankering for food wise, as there are too many choices.
