The color of the leather has bleached out in a large area. Will leather accept the stain of the table? The undamaged area does match the stain on the wood. This is a old piece of furniture. Thanks for your help!

STOP STOP!!!

I tooled leather as a hobby and part time income for over 20 years. PLEASE don't start with shoe polish and so forth. You must know what is currently on the table before an intelligent answer can be formulated. Leather can be colored with dye, paint, or a chemical solution. Finishes range wider afield than colors do and all that information is critical. I would need to see the table before I could give you definite answers but if you can take it to a Tandy Leather Store, they can almost certainly get you started on the right path toward a repair. The individual sales clerk may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but the store manage will probably be able to help you directly and if not he should know someone who can. Just keep asking questions until you get an answer that you can work with. And if you have access to more than one Tandy Leather Store, check them all out, especially if you place any worth on that table.

You didn't state the value of the table either but if it has significant value, either monetary or sentimental, you might want to seek out someone who can do the work you need done and do it so professionally that you will not be able to detect the repair. These guys are rare and they do cost money but it could be worth it. That is something you will have to decide.

It can be done very easily. If the wood is only damaged you can use a product made my Homer Formby that strips the old varnish off and reseals the wood. All you would have to do is stain it to the color of your choice.
If the leather is damaged you can go to any Tandy Leather company and they sell leather scraps at a reasonable price. Just peel the old leather off and pay attention to the way that it was place on the table. Then just reinstall the new piece of leather on the top by using a glue or other type of adhesive that will not damage the leather. Tandy also sell these types of products.
Or you can take it to a furniture re-finisher and pay an good amount of money and have them do it for you.
You can also go to www.diynetwork.com and they have some great instructions for refinishing furniture.
I hope this information can be useful for you. Have a great day.

Try a product by Savogran, it's called "Strypeze" works well and is a paste so it will cling to your vertical pieces like the legs. This might take a couple times to remove the varnish &urathane, your lucky your choosing a cherry finish because by going with a darker finish I don't think you'll have to sand every bit of stain out of it. Once stripped use a good palm sander and start off with a 100 grit paper and finish with 150 grit then stain it your cherry. I've found that minwax stain is the worst product to use, they now skimp on their pigment so I've found ZAR stains and products to be the best. Once you've gotten your stain to some what match your hutch then start with the poly urethane at least 3 light coats and sand with 220 grit paper in between coats followed by using a tack cloth also to remove dust from each sanding, for the best table top I recommend 5 coats of urethane, Good luck Les the painter P.S those citrus based strippers will take forever and go to a real paint store for good results

one of your answers had mentioned shoe polish, this is fine but once that dries apply some mink oil to the hole top to equalize the color and protect it from happening again.
