More whites are in poverty simple because America is about 75% white. About 24,000 whites are in poverty compared to about 8000 blacks, 1000 Asians and 9000 Hispanics.

However, just as a group alone; about 10% of whites are in poverty while blacks as a group, are about 24%; Asians are at 11%; and Hispanics are about 22%.

According to a May 31, 2005 (4?) issue of Business Week magazine, one quarter of the adult working population in the US (all ethnic groups) was at or below the poverty line. 25% of the workforce in the US makes less than $9 / hour - the Federal poverty level.

This does NOT sound like a "kinder, gentler" nation. What does it say about our values when we have "income" and "expense", but only guarantee "expense".

What does it say about our values when 1/4 of the workforce is at or below poverty?

What does it say about us when the Federal minimum wage is $5.15 an hour, but the poverty level is $9.04? It costs almost $4 an hour more to live than the government requires business to pay.

What does it say about the consciousness of a country that HAS TO HAVE A LAW about the minimum to pay people...or at what age you can have young people work...or that you shouldn't discriminate.

Where is our compassion? Where is our love? What do we REALLY value? On the face of it, it doesn't sound like people.

I wish you Peace.

Mexicans and blacks aren't poor because we will pay for them. you very rarely see any one with out a car or cable, electricity, or shoes. poor is a choice in this country, we ARE the land of opportunity. if a person wants to work, there is something for them to do. we have so many jobs that this is the excuse for all the illegals. there should be no poverty in this country, if the Americans wanted to work, the illegals would be sent home. think about this. very few whites get any free benefits, they are told to go to work.

The highest group in poverty are Anglo (white) - however, that is the national origin of most of the United States, so you have to take that in terms of the proportion of people in the United States. The proportion of minorities living in poverty is higher than Anglo America.

Hard to say man. I'm Indian and I'm managing to keep my job for now, though it might go to China. All my white AND black AND non-Mexican hispanic friends are pretty much in the same boat. We're in danger of downsizing. The Mexicans I know are pretty well employed and can afford new trucks and what not, so legal or not, I guess they're doing OK.

I would say whites, since by statistics there are more whites. Everyone assumes if you are white you have money but there are just as many whites that don't have homes or are very poor or without food as any other race.

The poverty line in this country is far above the rich folks in other countries. It's all a matter of perspective.
