I think it is brought up so that people won't criticize the Israeli nation for their wrongs. They want us to feel sorry for them and be on there side no matter what.

Professional victims!!! The world is full of them, just look around, a large percentage of the American population falls into that category as well. Remember the folks in New Orleans who returned to there homes and were pissed off because some government agency had not cleaned them up and repaired all the damage.
The ironic part is the people in this category, although normally nothing but whiners, actually believe that they were simply dealt a bad hand in life and that they deserve better. And, the government should take from others to bolster them.
I don't recall the speaker but someone once said, "I believe in luck, and the harder I work the more luck I seem to have".
Just my thoughts on the issue...

I don't think it's a matter of wanting to be pitied. The Israeli fighting force is one of the best on the planet for a nation of its size. Israel is, for the most part, a peace-loving nation, but like any other country, they have a right to defend their borders.
The Jewish nation has been scattered over the globe for 2000 years. Only in 1948 did they reclaim their homeland, and the one week blitz in 1967 gave them back their holy city of Jerusalem.
The Jews have suffered much persecution throughout the centuries from the pogroms of Russia to the atrocities of the Holocaust. Yet, they have survived as a unique people and nation. They deserve our respect, not our pity, and I think most Israelis would agree.

U have pinned it down nicely... all powerful numerical minorities who have stayed dominant historically have used this method of generating pity for themselves... as though they were a great asset to humanity and should thus be especially pitied. This is a historical skill perfected over centuries otherwise exclusivity and survival of a smaller powerful group is not possible
Many people suffer as though they deserved to suffer... if you look the underdogs of this world... they have just recently started fighting for their rights. An appropriate example is the Bhramins and other upper castes in India and the Dalits (Untouchables). While Dalits have suffered social ostracism since three thousand years, it is the upper castes who cry most about loss of their exclusive privilege to rule since a few decades. This social upheaval has still not touched majority of the so called untouchables and they are more or less reconciled with their lowly status.

Stop asking the same question
1) Israel is defending itself from a lebanese government funded terroist organization that is connected with Al-QUeda.
2) How does Israel want us to feel sorry for them?
3) Israel offered palestinians their own nation. They turned it down. You know why? They want to wipe israelis off the map in the name of ALLAH.
4) What wrongs have the Israelis comited? Accidently killing innocent children? You do realize that we killed an unbelievable amount of innocent childrne in our own wars (see iraqi war). Because its WAR. Accidents happen. Get that through your thick anti-semetic zionist propaganda mind.

For the same reason that African-Americans harp on slavery, for the same reason that Americans whine about outsourcing, for the same reason that the Palestinians whine about the Israelis, etc.
Everyone wants to be the pitied victim.
