Because they can feel more disconnected from things that don't matter. I think that people are so used to this, however, that they actually get defensive when people have an opinion that differs from theirs. Lots of control freaks out there... oftentimes to the extent that if you have an opinion that is different from them, they feel the need to argue rataher than discuss the unique-ness of people.

Because it's easier & less painful to talk about things which don't matter, rather than to dwell on things that do.
That's why people make a lot of 'small talk'. Way easier than baring your soul, don't you think?
