My views on the following: Yes: Gold Cup is not a dirty one. It is just a valuable object given to champions. But I think one of the individuals in the team measured a dirty way to acquire it, and indeed he did! not very glorifying. This does not undermine the value of gold :-) but diminshes the pride of having it at this occasion.

It is not a dirty cup ...the Italian team deserved to win including materazzi, who scored 2 goals for the team.....and he should be very proud of himself!!! It's soccer not playschool!!!!!

Well, as "dirty" as Materazzi can be, the fact that he badmouthed Zizou's sister and mom doesn't have anything to do with Italy's achievement. Italy did *not* win the World Cup *because* Materazzi insulted Zidane's family. Nor does it have to do with Zidane being sent off -- there were only 10 minutes left, and yeah, Zidane would have taken one of the penalty kicks, but Trezeguet would have taken (and missed) his too.

Italy won because they converted all of their penalty kicks, and France didn't.

The Materazzi-Zidane affair is only a side episode that doesn't affect the result of the match or Italy's pride.

Italy won the Cup, plain and simple. They won the matches, they beat France in the arbitrary shootout - end of story. That's the story.
