When my great-grandmother died. I remember being in the hospital room when she went and my mom and grandmother crying. I was 4 and I couldn't understand why they were so upset that Nanny went to sleep. My aunt took me out into the hall and explained to me that Nanny wasn't going to wake up, that she was in Heaven. That's also the first time I was angry with God....I was mad he took my Nanny.

When I was first taught bedtime prayer...
"now I lay me down to sleep...
...
if I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take"
I was raised Catholic....pre Vatican 2....went to Catholic school as kid...
and thinking back objectively on ...my feeling is that fear is weapon in religious arsenal.
cause that pretty spooky stuff to be laying on a kid.
Don't do Catholic anymore.
I am AGNOSTIC....
And ..I have never been born again...not even once.
I would never teach a kid a prayer like that..
it's a form of abuse.

When I was about 8. A soldier got shot four times in the chest and died. The soldier was embalmed (I will never forget the smell) and was brought home for viewing (his own house). Everyone was allowed to come and hang out, to mourn or out of curiosity. In my native country we keep our dead at home for viewing until burial.

I guess sometime before I was 2. I was about to go in for heart surgery and told my dad that if I was still alive afterward I wanted to see the ponies again.

I can't exactly remember, but many children from my generation learned about it from seeing the Disney movie, "Bambi", when Bambi's mother was shot and killed by hunters.
