In Max Weber's thought, "routinization of charisma" refers to when, in the development of a religion, after the founding prophet or visionary dies, a priesthood is established.
In other words, the "charisma" (sacred power) that was formerly vested only in the prophet is, over time, transferred to the specially designated performers of the religion's ritual activities, and it is in the offices of those who perform these routinized activities (priests) that "charisma" is then seen to reside.
