It's a great idea, but can your trip be a bit shorter? I took my nephew on his first train trip when he was about 5. 2 or 3 hours total might be better. Get a snack in the cafe car (they are small, but she can see how tiny the cafe is and all kids relate to pizza and hot dogs), examine all the compartments and features in the coach car (water, trash, fire extinguisher, luggage rack, foot rack, reclining seats, seat trays, the stuff in the magazine rack, the tiny bathrooms, the seat checks), explore the train station. Take a book on trains and read it together, but make sure you've already read it together ahead of time. That way she can be excited about seeing things in real life. When we went, we went one way for 3 hours. My nephew's dad put him on the train at one stop, his mom picked us up at the other. He's 19 and still talks about it. We've since gone cross country in sleepers 3 times together, but the first one was magic.

You say," I'd like to book a return ticket please." And when the guy in the ticket office says," Where to?" You say,"Back here, of course!"
