Are you thinking about what serving in the military will mean to you personally? If so, you must evaluate your situation and follow your conscience. I am sure there are some circumstances where an able bodied man should not serve in the military. Some people are just not suited for military duties. This is no fault of anyone. Maybe talking to some veterans would give you different views of the experience.

Conscription is only introduced when a country feels itself seriously threatened by a possible attack.
The problem with that is that the military get people who don't want to be there. Nobody is happy with that.

A volunteer military is far preferable, but may not supply sufficient numbers to make it viable as a fighting force.

So we have the present situation, where adverts 'Your Country Needs YOU', help those who have signed on as a career.

It certainly does the individual no harm at all, and in most cases, produces people with self discipline, something the present generation lack.

No. We've more than enough good and moral people who are willing to serve in our military.

I see no need to force the military to reach to the bottom of the barrel.
