Zidane should be punished. The soccer players ALWAYS use words on the field. Anyways, you might think I'm saying this just because I'm ITALIAN, but YOU ARE WRONG. I'm saying this because I follow soccer & I KNOW soccer. All I know is that this sympathy trick Zidane is using, is all fake. When Poulsen instigated Totti in 2004, and Totti reacted by spitting, in which yes, Totti was at fault, did the media bother asking Totti what happened, or ask him to go on a show to talk about it?? And, remember that ZIDANE, it was NOT the first time he headbutted someone, he did the same when he played for JUVENTUS.
Thank You. :-)

Punishing Materazzi does not make any sense. None of the officials have heard what was said on the field.
On the other hand, Zidane's action was seen by the 4th official and can be enforced with the videos: he is probably going to be suspended for 5-6 games. Anything else is just pure speculation from the media.
The main problem here is that the 2006 World Cup Final was watched by billions of people, and most of them do not have so much understanding of soccer rules and regulations.
They watched and commented the game based on their culture and their believes. So, for some people verbal abuse is "worse" than headbutting. For some others, Materazzi should even press charges on Zidane. Everyone has its own opinion, based on where they live and on how their society is structured. Great! I understand all of that!
BUT
A soccer match (such as the World Cup Final) has its own rules and in this case they were properly applied on the field! Anything else is just pure speculation from the media and from people that like to complain about everything (without real knowledge of the game)

just tell me what you will do when someone is insulting your family your family? I would of done the same things as Zidane. Materazzi is a racist and got what he deserved. It is one thing to insult the player himself on the field but when you go insult Innocent people who are not playing at all then you have gone too far. I think that Materzazzi should be banned from international play.

Even though I support France this is what exactly should be done Zidane should be punish, because Totti did almost the same thing by spitting on a player in last 2004 European Nations Cup, and he was banned for playing for the national team for several games..........
And also Zidane is too major for doing such a thing plus that was the last game in his career, he should have maintain his clamness till the end of the game and FIFA would have dealt with Matterrazzi severely...........

i think both of them should be punished. its a soccer game, they have to play their game and NOT insult. and also for Zidane it was to much to hit Materazzi, but well what would you do in his place? just look at Materazzi and say thanks?
well anyway, Zidane will retire anyway, but i would want Materazzi to be punished in some level. (btw i wasnt for France, i wanted Italy to win)

they cant do a thing about materazzi. as you said, everyone talks trash during the games. as for zidane, i thought a pretty bad punishment was not being able to walk with your team to get your silver medal....and looking like an idiot in front of billions of people.
people should just forget about it. it happened. its done. italy won. no point in punishing anyone any further.

i think they both got their punishment on the field. zidane was emotionally hurt and materazzi was physically hurt. why r officials getting into this? i think ppl just dont want to give up the wc. its too hard and this is keeping it alive.
