Its not the best thing for them, however if it is laid down be sure to stand it upright and not turn it on for at least a few hours. This will give the refrigerant & oils in the compressor to redistribute. Be warned that not all units will work properly afterward though.

Some recovery unit are oil less and it wont matter, If any equipment contains oil you have to stand it upright and allow time for oil to return to compressor before starting,otherwise it will start up with no lubrication and burn compressor up.

No, most techs just throw them in thier trucks when thier done recovering refrigerant, they roll on thier side, turn upside down and keep on working.
