Yes, but you do know that Doctors are just witchdoctors who dress differently and disguise their herbs and roots professionally. Not an exact science is it? By the way, I always found the following statement bizarre:

The operation was a resounding success, but the patient died.

Yes, especially since I think my doctor uses different definitions of the word at various times. Thank goodness we don't need to visit very often.

They practice medicine, as an astute answerer already pointed out, because they are practitioners.
When surgery or an examination or treatment happens it is not practiced, it is performed.
You are looking for semantic cuteness where none exists.
