I've been taking traditional prescribed medication for my blood pressure for some years, and am concerned about the side effects. Does anyone know of any alternatives that work?

Sally is right--there is some interesting new news about adjusting the C1 vertebra (first at the top) from a medical doctor. It releases pressure on the area that controls blood pressure in the brain. It is a VERY specific procedures, and you have to ask around for it. I also use magnesium in the Natural Calm form, powdered. It helps to regulate the heart. I have to take a calcium channel blocker to reduce BP, but when I've been out I've used the Natural Calm and it's worked! Yoga and swimming will also lower your BP, and better controlling your environment is really important. There is also a small machine (there are several brands) that is a biofeedback process, and it is proven to lower BP. Respirate is at the high end--I've tried EMWAVE (made by HeartMath) and it really does work. Give it a try!

First High Blood pressure is a condition, once occured, stays with you all your life. There is no alternative to the medicines but there are ways to supplement the effects of the drug and probably decrease the dose you are currently taking. However there is no way you can quit medicines. The effects of quiting the medicine will be more grave then the side effects of your current medicine.

First, excercise regularly atleast 30 min a day. It can be brisk walking or climbing up stairs. These have proved very helpful in long term blood pressure control.

Second, avoid salt as much as possible.

Third, have a positive attitude towards life and towards your blood pressure. Smile and make others smile.

Try to bypass anxiety, tension, anger etc. They do raise the blood pressure instantly.

If your current drug gives you side effects that really concern you then try consulting your doctor for a different drug that might suite you better.
Good Luck.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

non prescription stuff isnt powerful enough to lower your bp significantly, id just try talking to your doc or pharmacist about switching meds if you arent tolerating what you are on very well.

if you arent already, following a DASH diet, losing weight if youre heavy, and excercising regularly can lower your bp some. my gf's dad use to be a really big guy, probably 300-350 lbs then went on a health kick after a relative died, picked up biking, dropped down to 200 lbs and no longer needed his bp or cholesterol meds. i thought that was pretty impressive, most people in his situation dont have the willpower/dedication to do that.

High blood pressure is, therefore, best treated without drugs. If we consider the fact that in this condition, the circulation is working too hard to nourish the cells, then it seems reasonable that some of the causes include excess weight, electrolyte imbalances, lack of exercise, fluid overload (due to poor kidney function), stress and fatty-acid imbalances. The last cause usually involves deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids and too much trans fat in the diet. These trans fats replace saturated fats in the cell walls with the result that they become too stiff.

hi i'm a massage therapist and while in school we were taught the many benefits of massage. lowering your b/p is one of them. also a good diet can't hurt or should i say a better diet. of course u want to stay well hydrated so drink lots of water. try a massage like every other week or as often as you can afford. many ppl have yet to get on the massage band wagon, but many ppl have. the baby boomers are the 1st generation to lean more towards alternative meds b/c they are tired of pills, pills, and more pills. massage is an age old remedy that dates back to china thousands of years ago. it worked then and it still works today. also u may want to see a nutritionist, they can make the struggle of finding the right combination of foods to lower your b/p. dr.'s tend to give a generalized solution to our health problems what we all really need is a customized health plan. good luck!!!!!!

Take potassium and magnesium supplements, stay away from starchy foods and sugars. Potassium lowers blood pressure. Exercise helps tremendously, too. These all work for me. I used to be on blood pressure meds, but thanks to using these alternatives, I don't need them anymore. Also, if you are nervous, take St. John's Wort, Rhodiola, and especially B-Complex supplements along with Folic Acid and Ester C. Folic Acid helps with energy. Stay away from sugar and starchy foods.
