Leak checking your A/C is not dangerous, it isnt some mysterious black box that will blow up if you do something wrong. To do a proper leak check you can either use an electronic leak detector or soap. The electronic leak detector could be hard to find, if there is a grainger near by, they will have it. Soap is much easier to obtain but doesnt work that well for the hard to get at spots, add dish soap and water to a spray bottle and spray all the tubing, coils and compressor, if there is a leak you will see it bubble. Now if there is no refrigerant in you A/C you will have to buy some dry nitrogen and pressure the A/C system up to about 200 PSIG and then check for leaks, if you still think you have a leak pressure it up to 200 PSIG let it sit for a few hours, you should still have 200 PSIG. If you cannot find the leak, it may be either so small or in one of the coils that you wont find it without an ultrasonic leak detector. These are not that cheap though.

all according what part of the system u want to test!
the duct work, u can get a " smoke pencil" close off the returns and supply feeds to the rooms........u will fill the duct work with the smoke and look for leaks.......u need to know what ur doing for this...
to check the line set u will need to disconnect the cooper tubing at both ends and add pressure, air, and put a gauge on one end and check it after 12 hrs. if it drops then leak somewhere in the copper.......
i'd call a hvac man and have him do it.......

frist thing you do is visually check lines, compressor, coil.and service ports.you are looking for oil spots usually with dirt stuck to the oil .if all clean then make sure there is some freon in the system .install your gages add nitrogen to 200 ilbs .use 1 part water to5 parts liquid soap and dab at suspect areas also watch your gage if you dont lose any pressure than you dont have a leak.but remember freon is perment .if you have to add freon than there is a leak

use your yellow pages to call a qualified hvac person to come test it for you.
this stuff can be dangerous for the novice. have a qualified person come out and service your device. better safe than sorry.
