Because it is a competition, for a great many people. I'm not one of them, tho'. That's the way our society operates, and capitalism thrives on it, so it's acceptable behavior.
We're like children with a new toy - we don't want it anymore when we see someone else with something newer and shinier. So we toss the old to the side without a second thought, forgetting about it instantly and not caring about where it went or what happened to it, and then complain and whine until we get what we want. Then we do it all over again.
That's the main reason for our disposable society, and the reason why we have so many choices offered to us in stores and whatnot.
