My friend is having a 1999 Civic, LX and we notice huge shift in the temperature in the stop and go traffic. It stays normal in the freeway speeds, but the moment we get off the freeway, stop and go at 5 or 6 lights, that is when the temp. reaches abnormal levels. It comes down after driving for a while without stopping, but still stays little above the normal level. Recently got a thermostat changed, but is not any better. Your suggestions are appreciated.

Yes it's a simple fix. One of two things. the high temp sensor or the fan is shot. both are easy to replace and relatively cheap to buy. Oh yeah check the fuse for the fan too. If you need to know more just e-mail me.

first thing I would check is the anti-freze level and all the rest of the fluids. does the fan start running when your in stop and go traffic and on the highway.check that out too. this will probably sound funny but, when you changed the thermostat did you burp the system? there should be a little screw on top of the goose neck if you turn the screw to open while the car is running there should be a steady stream of antifreeze coming out if not leave it open until there is don't forget to turn your heater on to defrost and the fan on high to help get the fluid thru the entire system. If you need more help E-mail me at danea790@yahoo.com I'll be glad to help

the fan is not coming on. When the car hits a a high temp the fan comes on like when you are stopped. when you are moving air flows across radiator and keeps it cool. you have to check why the fan is not working.
