Had been mowing the lawn for about an hour today and stopped it to talk to a neighbor just before it was done. Tried to restart after about 5-10 minutes then the motor kept intermittently revving then slowing down (almost stall) - kept doing this over and over... about 2 seconds of rev then 2 seconds really slow. Three weeks ago, I cleaned the air filter and replaced the spark plug (followed all instructions for gapping the plug and oil soaking the filter). The mower worked great for the two weeks after that and for the first hour today. There was no smoke. I let it rest for a half hour then re-started... same thing. Checked the oil... about halfway down the 'add' area... nothing overly concerning. Checked the gas... low but not empty. I filled that gas tank anyway and restarted... same thing... so I just finished the last 4 rows (very slowly) then stopped.

Do you think that the mower skipping was due to it being hot from running for an hour or could it be something else?

The air filter is a foam filter right? thats where the oil soaking the filter comes from.

Briggs maybe? Btw, use either straight hd-30 or 10w-30 to 5w-30 synthetic..... conventional multi weight WILL get consumed like nothing. (breaks down easy)

Try removing the gas cap, just to rule a non venting gas cap out...... Btw, if this is a briggs (carb mounted to tank? the tanks or carbs can warp, causing it to suck air and fluctuate)

Here are my suggestions. Recheck the gap on your spark plug. Check the underside of the deck (where the blade is) to see if there is a build up of grass clippings near the blade or the belt.

The one thing that confused me was oil soaking the air filter? Ive never heard of that...make sure you are correct about that...
If you let it rest for half an hour then it should have cooled down if it was an over heat problem.

The bogging down means that there is an excessive load to the engine and it has to work harder to do the same job as before. If none of my suggestions work then please take it to a service shop and have them look at it. Try to get a free quote and ask them what is wrong with the lawnmower...who knows, maybe they will tell you and you will know how to fix it.

Good Luck

Lawn Mower Skipping

Check the idle on it, if it's too low it will seem to sputter..this goes for auto-mobiles too.

just one more thing..check the cable that goes from the lever handle to the carburator and see if it ok, meaning not loose or broken.

it might be because it's old or just go under the mower and look around it might be something as little as a lose screw
