Are Sunni Muslims more moderate than the Shiites? If the West's dialogue with Muslims were directed to the Sunnis would we make more progress than trying, to support the Shiites in Iraq? Hypothetically, if there were no Sunni/Shiite split, would Muslims be easier to deal with?

There are hardcore fanatics in both camps. There are also Sufi Muslims you never hear about. Muslims never tell non believers their sect because they do not want to appear divided. They would rather you didn't know.

The whole Sunni/Shiite problem in Iraq was exacerbated if not caused by the US Government's (under Reagan) decision to support Saddam Hussein and so his Sunnis as a hedge against Shiite Iran. Divide and conquer. But then Saddam got a big head and decided to invade Kuwait, and the US couldn't let that happen, not for any notions of defending against aggression, but purely to keep Iraq from controlling most of the oil supply, and with Saddam deposed, Sunnis are out of favor.

Anyway, to say Sunnis are or aren't more moderate than Shiites is like saying Catholics are or aren't more moderate than Protestants. You've got saber rattling nut job cheerleaders on all sides.

It's just the groups of Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq that are trying to kill each other off that are the problem. This has nothing to do with all the rest of the Sunnis/Shiites in the world. Don't make all Sunni/Shiite Muslims look bad just because some of them are doing wrong. There are some perfectly nice Muslims in this world. They ARE human after all.

There needs to be dialogue between the fighting Muslim factions. The Shiite/Sunni fighting has been going on for hundreds of years, and U.S. influence in the region is not going to stop it by any means. They would be fighting whether we are there or not. I find much wisdom in many modern Muslim scholars writings, and many feel the extremism must end if Islam is to survive. The solution must come from within the Muslim community, not from outside.
