I'm sorry, what were you saying...I was telling my kids to clean their room.
People have this tendancy to throw up "roadblocks" when listening. They like to lecture, judge, offer their own situations, praise etc instead of active listening. This gives them a sense of superiority: look how much I know!! I took a course that taught that active listening is more effective. It was impressive to learn and I became a better boss, father and husband just by listening better.

We, as humans, are prone to be self centered. We want others to know what we think. There are others though, such as myself, who would rather listen then talk. I'm rather shy in real life, and I am not agressive enough to make myself heard, so maybe that's why I like these questions. It gives me a chance to "speak" and not feel like a fool :-)

people are social creatures, we like to hang in groups
on result of this is talkativness, maybe we do this to gain support or just to get a point across, or maybe it''s because we have something to say and we feel a need to say it
this results in a lack of listening
we talk too much, s we listen too little

because its all about ME ME ME ME ME up in this space, people in general have lost how to really LISTEN to other people, even if you like their message or not, in modern american society the all encompassing, all knowing, all displacing ME is GOD and nothing else another ME has to say is as important as what "I" have to say. Thats why people dont listen, thats why.
