Mid to late October in the southern part of West Virginia! Actually any part of WV because we have mountains all around us. You will see some of the most gorgeous fall foliage.....Travel up the New River Gorge if you can. There is a special passenger train which departs from Huntington, WV and takes you thru the New River and arrives in Hinton, WV. It is a round trip. Many people come from all over the USA to enjoy the train ride and seeing the fall foliage. It is usually the last two weekends of October.

I would go to the Adirondacks in part because of the sweeping vistas visible from the road because the mountains are not so steep. Of course the maple trees in New England are legand. Adirondack Park encompasses about two-thirds of upstate New York, embracing some 6 million acres of both private and state land. Nearly half of it is wilderness. I found it more beautiful than Vermont which I would also suggest. There is a web site for foliage in Vermont which will show the highest probability for peak colors. These areas are not densely populated which adds to the experience. I'm going the first week in October. The peak varies year to year.

Most definitely the East Coast. I live in Connecticut and each year I am amazed at how beautiful my state looks. I have also seen such beauty in Maine and Vermont. Nothing beats New England in the fall.
