okay, now that i know the turtle was laying eggs, how long will it be before they hatch and can i build something around them to protect them so nothing will kill them when they dig their way out of the hole?

Do build something around it... it is common for raccoons, possums and skunks to dig up the nests. I have often used a cage or make a wire mesh out of chicke wire and put it over it and burry the edges around the nest. When the turtles hatch, they will be trapped and you must remove them. Turtles often come out around dusk. So after 60 days, check daily to see if they have hatched. If they stay in the cage all day, they will fry in the sun. Remove them from the cage and release them.

P.S. This is what many herpetologists do for threatened species around the world.

By building something around the nest, you would be endangering them. When they come out, they will not be able to get to cover or to the water and will be easier to pick off by predators. And anything you build around the nest is no guarantee that a raccoon or other predator couldn't dig up the nest and eat the eggs. It would be best to leave things alone and let nature take its course.

a mother turtle wont lay her eggs anywhere were she thinks they would be endangered, you have to leave nature alone and let the cycle of life happen, the only time i interfered was when some one came and cut half of our tree down and there was baby birds inside, the mother never came back and 2 had already died so i brought them into a place that raised baby birds. the turtles will be fine, you have to just let them be.

I really hate it when human beings feel the need to "Help" a mother ANYTHING raise their children. The only animals that Im aware of that are not born with the mothering instinct built-in, are humans and Panda's. Leave them alone man or you're gonna kill them! Or call animal control and have them send out an expert.
