Whenever I put my computer in the standby mode then try to get back online I receive in the task bar a "cannot find server" message and I must unplug then then plug in my external modem to the power source for my cable INS provider before I can re-connect.

maybe some system files are broken and the Internet connection cannot be reinitialized. Or it might be a problem with the software of your modem/LAN adapter. Try to reinstall the drivers, and check your anti-virus/firewall settings.
Also it could be a SO problem. If that persist, reinstall it.

Try to shut down your computer instead of putting it on stand by for a couple of times.that might help.
