Not sure where all the horror stories are coming from. I wash all my down comforters at least 3 times a year. I dry them in dryer. My oldest comforter is 10-12 years old so it's been through approximately 30 or more washings and it's just perfect. No matting, clumping, or smells. I bought mid-price range comforters (on sale $100-150 each). Mine are box-stitched, meaning the down is sewn into smaller squares in the blanket so it cant' really clump or shift. I recommend washing in warm water with detergent and bleach. Drying time on high heat for a king sized comforter is about 2 hours.

I have several down comforters from Germany and I have always washed them in my washer. I would suggest a tumble washer like at the Laundromat. I use my regular detergent but don't use a liquid water softener. Tumble dry on low with a pair of tennis shoes or some other solid item to break up the feathers inside.

There are a lot of products you can buy today that allow you to "dry clean" in your own home. I have never used them myself but have heard from others that they do a decent job. However, unless you have a lot of pieces that need dry cleaned regularly I would suggest having it down professionaly because the price of the start up kit is probably close to that of having the comforter done at the dry cleaners. I have included a link to one of the most popular products. I hope this help. Take care and I hope you have an amazing day!

It`s better to wash them in a frontload washing machine. Let them air dry and then fluff in cool dryer. I have washed many of them , but some can not be put in dryer.

I wash mine in my washer...I put it on delicate setting. It comes out fine. Make sure you "air fluff" dry it or dry it on a cycle that isn't hot.
